Imple Description of ATS

ATS is the abbreviation of Automatic Transfer Switch. It is an electrical device used for automatic switching between power sources, whose core function is to ensure that critical loads (equipment or systems with high requirements for power supply continuity) can switch to a backup power source quickly and seamlessly when the main power source fails, thus avoiding power supply interruptions.
In simple terms, its working logic consists of three steps: "Monitor - Judge - Switch":
  1. Real-time monitoring of power status: The ATS continuously detects key parameters of the main power source (usually the municipal grid power), such as voltage and frequency, to confirm whether it is normal.
  2. Automatic judgment in case of failure: When the main power source malfunctions (such as power outage, abnormal voltage (too high/too low), frequency deviation, etc.) and the fault duration reaches a preset value (to avoid misjudgment of instantaneous fluctuations), the ATS determines that the main power source has failed.
  3. Quick switch to backup power source: The ATS immediately disconnects the connection with the main power source and at the same time closes the path to the backup power source (such as a diesel generator, battery bank, or another backup municipal power supply), allowing the backup power source to supply power to the load.
  4. Reset after main power source recovery: When the main power source returns to normal and operates stably for a period of time, the ATS will automatically (or manually according to settings) switch back to the main power source for power supply, and disconnect the backup power source at the same time, restoring the system to its initial state.
Its key features and application scenarios:
  • High reliability: The switching process is fast (usually in milliseconds to seconds) and fully automated without manual operation, avoiding losses caused by delays due to human factors.
  • Protection functions: Some ATS models are equipped with overload, short-circuit, and phase-failure protection to prevent damage to the load or the switch itself during the power switching process.
  • Core application scenarios:
    • Medical field: ICUs, operating rooms, and life-support equipment in hospitals, which require zero interruption of power supply.
    • Commercial and industrial fields: Data center servers, elevators, fire protection systems, and key equipment in industrial production lines.
    • Civil scenarios: Emergency lighting and water pumps in high-rise residential buildings, or power supply systems in remote areas that rely on backup generators.
